Café Rischart
Marienplatz 18

The enticing baked goods at the Rischart Bakery are savored by people all over Munich. They have more than ten bakeries and cafés in the city including one open at the “Wies’n”** during the time of the world famous Oktoberfest.

** Wies’n, the location of the Oktoberfest

Their most central location is in the pedestrian zone at the Marienplatz. Sitting there at the sidewalk café watching the world go by while enjoying breakfast or lunch, coffee and a delicious piece of torte in the afternoon or one of their delectable ice cream specialties anytime during the rest of the day is something one could easily get used to.

This bakery, dating back to 1883, is totally entwined in the local way of life.

South of Munich in the small town of Straßlach is the location of this outstanding restaurant, with a tradition of over 100 years and many well earned awards. The upscale “Gasthof zum Wildpark” is decorated in the rustic alpine style and includes a large partially heated beer garden. You can find pictures on their website at www.roiderer.de (German language only). The restaurant is supplied by their own meat market which offers a wide variety of local specialties.

The boss here is the host of the Hacker–Festzelt which is one of the nicest beer tents at the original Oktoberfest in Munich.

This restaurant was reviewed and rated by our Bavarian contributor H.-G. as upscale and excellent. Looking at their online menu I would consider the prices as still affordable.

Restaurant Ve Skále

Not in Bavaria, but close enough!

Restaurant Ve Skále

About 15km from the Bavarian border in the Czech Republic is a restaurant you have to see. An old beer storage cellar was rebuilt into a restaurant/museum. The food was very good and well presented for a decent price. H.-G., the contributor who finds a lot of nice places, surprised us when he took us there for lunch on a Sunday.

The restaurant was very busy and that reflected a little bit on the service, which was still acceptable.

If you are in the area you have to see and experience this one.

Gasthof Raitschin, Regnitzlosau

Whenever we go back for a visit to the old country we plan in a stop at the Gasthof Raitschin. It was our mother’s favorite restaurant and on any of our visits there we always had excellent food and friendly service. The choices on the menu were enough to satisfy everyone at the table. From roasted elk to the “Franken” specialty “Schäuferle”, Schnitzel to even braised beef tongue, Sauerbraten and also roasted goose breast, we always enjoyed our meals.

So, if you are on the Autobahn A93 between Hof and Rehau during dinnertime let your GPS take you there, the added 4km drive is well worth it and if you should stay there overnight you can also familiarize yourself with the selection of their 14 different beers.

Good food, friendly service and a “gemütliche” setting.

Akropolis Schönwald

Akropolis Restaurant
Rehauer Str. 4
95173 Schönwald

It is almost amazing that you would find a decent Greek restaurant in the sleepy small town of Schönwald. The small restaurant in the local decor does not suggest the Greek cuisine, until you get the menu.

After your order is taken the boss will serve you a shot of Ouzo, directly imported by him from Greece. Besides Gyros and other Greek specialties you naturally can also order a Schnitzel. The portions are generous, service in this small family run business is always friendly, the food excellent and the check at the end is affordable.

When we stay in Schönwald we always love to go to “the Greek”.

Brauereigasthof Krug, Breitenlesau

Life can’t get much better than spending a beautiful, warm Sunday afternoon in the region called the Fränkische Schweiz and ending it with a meal in Breitenlesau at the Brauereigasthof Krug.

Sitting with friends in the beer garden with a wholesome, tasty “Brotzeit” or a large Schnitzel in front of you, accompanied by one or two home brewed beer(s) (even three if you have someone to drive you home), that is “the ultimate living”.

The food here is original “Franken”, tastes excellent, with sizable portions, the beer is outstanding and you don’t get shocked when you get the check.

So, if you are in the region – program your GPS to take you there!

Steaks and Spare Ribs in Munich

The restaurant Rusticana was established over 40 years ago.

Their speciality here are slabs of spare ribs grilled on their large charcoal grill, served for parties on large rustic wooden boards, smothered with BBQ sauce and accompanied by baked potatoes and sour cream.

Along with it they feature the local beer specialities from the Spaten and Fransiskaner breweries.

It is your own fault if you are still hungry when you leave here.

Gasthaus/Restaurant Held-Bräu, Oberailsfeld

Gasthaus/Restaurant Held-Bräu, Oberailsfeld

reviewed and submitted by H.-G.

In the area north of Nuremberg is the mid size mountain region called the Fränkische Schweiz or Little Switzerland and almost in the center of it lays the village of Oberailsfeld.

A large church dominates over a few houses, mostly farms, and the local brewery with it’s beer garden and restaurant, which is frequented by many hikers during the warmer months.

Their menu, typical for the region, includes Beef Rouladen, Sauerbraten and besides the Franken specialty, the “Schäuferla”, you have a good selection of “Brotzeiten“(term described if you click on it).

Held-Bräu is well known in this area for their extremely palatable dark and light beers showing off the experience gained during their over 300 year old family-owned brewing history.

Another place well worth to stop in, eat and enjoy a beer.
